Prevalence of Consanguineous Marriages in India (NFHS-5, 2019-21)
Akhil Reddy
10 July 2025

According to NFHS-5 (2019-21), 10.8% of ever-married women (ages 15-49) in India are married to a blood relative. The highest prevalence is observed in Tamil Nadu (28%), Karnataka (27%), Andhra Pradesh (26%), Puducherry (19%), and Telangana (18%). While consanguineous marriages are deeply rooted in cultural traditions, they raise concerns about genetic risks, health complications, and the inheritance of recessive disorders. This data highlights the need for awareness about potential health impacts while respecting cultural practices and personal choices.
