Over 38 Lakh Vehicles Recalled in India Since 2012; Airbags and Engine Faults Lead

TL;DR: India’s SIAM Voluntary Recall Portal shows that over 38 Lakh vehicles were recalled from 24 manufacturers between 2012 and 2026. Honda Motorcycle Scooter India Private Limited, Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited and Maruti Suzuki India Limited dominate the recall landscape; not necessarily because they are less safe, but because they also sell more vehicles. Airbag & safety restraint, and Engine/Powertrain failures are the two most recurring hazard categories. A new pattern is now emerging: software and ECU bugs are steadily replacing hardware failures as the leading recall cause, especially among premium automakers. And as India adopts electric vehicles, battery and charging system faults are beginning to feature in recall records too.

Context

India’s automobile sector is massive and still expanding. In FY25, it produced 3.10 crore vehicles and sold 2.56 crore units domestically, contributing over ₹20 lakh crore to the economy and nearly 15% of total GST collections as per the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). India is the world’s third-largest passenger vehicle market and the largest two-wheeler market, with EVs now making up 7.8% of sales.

Against this scale and a rapidly growing vehicle base, safety and recalls carry significant weight. Since 2012, manufacturers have voluntarily reported defects, creating a public record of recall data. In this article, we shall look at the trends in vehicle recall data.

Who compiles this data?

The SIAM Voluntary Recall Information portal is the primary public record of vehicle recalls in India. The data includes the manufacturer name, voluntary recall date, affected vehicle model and variant, the period of manufacture, a description of the potential defect, and the total number of vehicles targeted for recall.

Key Insights

3 Crore vehicles were produced in India in 2024-25, highest ever
India’s automobile sector has demonstrated consistent long-term growth over the past decade, with some notable disruptions along the way. The industry produced a total of 31 million units of vehicles, including Passenger Vehicles, Commercial Vehicles, Three Wheelers, Two Wheelers, and Quadricycles in the financial year 2024-25, as against 28.4 million units in the financial year 2023-24.

Production rose from 20.6 million units in 2012-13 to a peak of 30.9 million units in 2018-19, before the pandemic pulled output down to 22.7 million units in 2020-21. Recovery was swift, with production climbing back to 31 million units by 2024-25, the highest level in the period. Sales followed a similar trajectory, growing from 17.8 million units in 2012-13 to 25.6 million units in 2024-25, with a pandemic-era trough of 17.6 million units in 2021-22.

Over 38 Lakh vehicles recalled since 2012
India’s vehicle recall data tells a story of scale. Of the nearly 38.7 lakh vehicles recalled over the years, the bulk comes from manufacturers that dominate Indian roads. Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India alone accounts for over 9.7 lakh units, followed by Suzuki Motorcycle India and Maruti Suzuki India, each with recall volumes running into several lakhs.

The pattern in vehicle recalls is revealing. In a country that is the world’s largest two-wheeler market and a top-three wheeler vehicle market, recalls tend to mirror market share. The bigger the footprint, the larger the exposure to defects, compliance gaps, or supplier issues. By contrast, premium and niche brands report far smaller recall numbers, reflecting both lower sales volumes and a narrower customer base. The recall list is less about isolated mechanical faults and more about the pressures of operating at an Indian scale, where millions of vehicles roll out annually, and even a minor defect can multiply quickly.

Airbag and engine-related faults account for almost 50% of total recalls

A vehicle recall is typically triggered when complaints about similar defects in the same make, model or variant cross a defined threshold and pose a potential risk to road safety or the environment. While SIAM’s portal provides detailed descriptions of defects, it does not classify them into broad categories. The categorisation used here is based on those descriptions and should therefore be interpreted with caution.

An analysis of recall incidents (as of February 2026), covering 38.67 lakh vehicles, shows that safety-critical systems dominate. Airbag and safety restraint defects account for about 25.4% of incidents, many linked to the Takata issue. Engine and powertrain faults follow at 24.6% and affect the largest number of vehicles. Together, these two categories make up nearly half of all recalls. Fuel system and software/ECU issues come next, reflecting growing electronic complexity, while battery and EV-related defects point to an emerging area of concern.

Why does it matter?
India’s road fatality rate remains one of the highest globally, with over 1.5 lakh deaths reported annually. While poor road design, speeding, and drunk driving are the leading causes, vehicle defects such as airbag failures, brake faults, and fuel system issues can compound the risk substantially when they occur in traffic. Such disclosures, either voluntarily or by Government order, can help in substantially reducing the road-related casualties.
