Close to 250 Tesla Cars Registered in India; About Half of them in Mumbai

TL;DR: Tesla officially entered India in July 2025 and registered 243 cars in the country by 31 January 2026. Around 206 registrations occurred in 2025, while January 2026 saw 37. Maharashtra accounts for more than half of all Tesla registrations, followed by Delhi and Gujarat. Registrations peaked in September 2025 during the initial launch phase and then stabilised in later months. The numbers show that Tesla’s entry into India is still in a very early stage, concentrated mainly in large metro cities with higher-income buyers and stronger EV infrastructure.
Context
Electric vehicles have slowly moved from being a niche category to a visible part of India’s automobile market. Government incentives, rising fuel costs and growing environmental awareness have encouraged more buyers to consider EVs.
Tesla’s official entry into India on 15 July 2025 marked an important moment in this transition. The company opened its first experience centre in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex and introduced the Model Y, imported from its Shanghai factory, with prices starting around ₹59.89 lakh. Unlike mass market EVs, Tesla operates in the premium segment. So, the early registration numbers are less about volume and more about understanding where early adopters are located and how quickly demand is building.
Who Compiles This Data?
The data is sourced from vehicle registration records available on the Parivahan Sewa platform under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Vehicle registrations are recorded at Regional Transport Offices across states, making RTO data one of the most reliable ways to understand how many vehicles are actually on the road rather than just booked or delivered.

Key Insights
Tesla registrations rose quickly after launch and then stabilised
Tesla registrations began picking up immediately after the company entered the Indian market. Between September and December 2025, more than 200 cars were registered. September alone accounted for 69 registrations, the highest monthly figure in the available data.
This initial spike is common when a new premium brand enters a market. Early buyers often include enthusiasts, business owners and customers who had been waiting for official entry rather than importing vehicles privately. After September 2025, registrations settled into a narrower range, with 40 in October, 48 in November and 49 in December. January 2026 recorded 37 registrations, suggesting that demand continued but at a more stable pace after the launch excitement faded.
Maharashtra dominates Tesla registrations in India
Tesla registrations are heavily concentrated in a few states.
Maharashtra alone accounts for 139 registrations out of the total 243. This means roughly 57% of all Tesla cars in India are registered in one state.
Delhi comes next with 44 registrations, followed by
Gujarat with 15 and
Tamil Nadu with 9.
Most other states have single-digit registrations. Registrations are clustered in metro regions such as Mumbai, Pune, and Delhi, where buyers have higher purchasing power and charging infrastructure is more accessible.
Within Maharashtra itself, Mumbai accounts for the majority of registrations across multiple RTO zones, followed by Pune and nearby urban regions. This suggests that Tesla’s early customer base is strongly urban and concentrated in financial and technology hubs.
Interestingly, Karnataka has only two registrations despite Bengaluru being a major technology hub, possibly reflecting Tesla’s current physical presence being limited to Mumbai.
Why Does It Matter?
Tesla registrations are not just about one company entering India. They offer an early signal of how the high-end EV market might evolve in the country. The data highlights three important trends.
First, early adoption is concentrated in a few major urban centres where infrastructure and income levels support premium EV ownership.
Second, initial demand spikes are driven by launch excitement and early adopters, after which growth becomes gradual and dependent on infrastructure expansion and service networks.
Third, state-level policies and urban ecosystems play a big role in shaping EV adoption patterns.
For policymakers, this shows that infrastructure and policy support matter as much as vehicle availability. For consumers, it shows that the EV transition in India will likely happen in stages, beginning with premium urban markets before expanding to wider segments.
